These are the guidelines I go over with every client before they head out.
Right after a session, your skin looks flushed and feels tight. That's completely normal. The micro-channels created during the treatment are still open, which means your skin is absorbing things at a higher rate than usual.
For the first day, stick to a gentle, unfragranced cleanser and a plain, calming moisturizer. Nothing active. No vitamin C serums, no retinoids, no acids of any kind. Your skin barrier has just been through something, and layering on actives right now will irritate it, not help it.
Skip makeup for at least 24 hours. I know that's hard if you have somewhere to be, but foundation and powder can clog those open channels and slow the healing process.
Keep your hands off your face. It sounds simple, and it is.
Some clients see light flaking or dry patches around day two or three. That's skin turning over, which is actually what you want. Resist the urge to scrub or exfoliate. Moisturize more, not harder.
Sun protection is non-negotiable during this window. Your skin is more sensitive to UV than usual, and in Sarasota the sun does not take a day off. A mineral sunscreen, applied gently, is the right move for the first week. Reapply it if you're going outside again in the afternoon.
Avoid heat: hot showers, saunas, and intense workouts raise your body temperature and can worsen redness or swelling. Lukewarm water for washing, and a lighter workout or rest day, will serve you better.
The collagen-building response that microneedling triggers unfolds over several weeks, not overnight. Most people start to see smoother texture and more even tone around the four to six week mark. Rushing the healing phase by reintroducing actives too soon, or skipping sunscreen, can slow that process down.
When you follow microneedling aftercare properly, you protect what the treatment started. The two things work together.
Some redness for two or three days is normal. Extended redness past that, any signs of breakout, or skin that feels painful rather than just sensitive, those are worth a quick call. It doesn't always mean something is wrong, but I'd rather you call and get a straight answer than sit with it.
Wait at least 24 hours, and ideally 48 if your skin still looks flushed. Applying makeup too soon can clog the micro-channels and increase the chance of irritation. When you do go back to makeup, start with clean, minimal products and avoid anything with fragrance.
Yes, but gently. Use lukewarm water and a mild, unfragranced cleanser. Pat dry with a clean towel. Skip anything foaming or active. The goal is to keep the skin clean without stripping it further while it starts to heal.
I usually suggest waiting at least five to seven days before reintroducing actives like retinol or vitamin C. Your skin needs to close up and settle before it's ready for those ingredients again. If you're unsure, err on the side of waiting longer rather than shorter.
Yes, light flaking or peeling around days two through four is a normal part of the process. It means your skin is turning over. Keep the area moisturized and do not pick or exfoliate. Let your skin shed on its own timeline.
As little as possible for at least a week. If you're going to be outside, a mineral sunscreen applied before you leave and reapplied throughout the day is essential. Sarasota sun is intense even in winter, so this isn't a step to skip even if it's overcast.
I recommend skipping intense exercise for at least 24 to 48 hours. Heat and sweat can irritate healing skin and worsen redness. A gentle walk is fine. Save the intense cardio for after the initial healing window closes.
Every client's skin heals a little differently, and good microneedling aftercare looks slightly different depending on your skin type, what else you're using, and how your skin responded to the treatment. If you have specific questions before or after your session, I'm happy to talk through them with you.

Lynn is the founder and lead aesthetician at SASS SRQ Sarasota. Her approach: she listens before she recommends anything, and she'll tell you if something isn't worth your money.
Lynn has worked in aesthetics for over ten years and opened SASS SRQ downtown so clients could get focused, one-on-one skin care without the upsell pressure of a big salon.
She's trained in microneedling, chemical peels, and advanced waxing techniques, and she takes the time to explain what she's doing and why it fits your skin.
Before recommending anything, Lynn asks about your skin history, lifestyle, and what's bothering you most - then builds from there.
