HydraFacial Aftercare: What to Do for the First 72 Hours

The short list
HydraFacial aftercare is mercifully simple, which is one of the reasons I recommend the treatment as often as I do. Wear sunscreen. Skip actives for a couple of days. Leave your skin alone. Do not book a workout for that afternoon.
That is genuinely most of it. The rest of this page is why, and what to do when something does not go the way you expected.
Sunscreen, and why it is not optional here
Your skin has just had its top layer of dead cells removed. What is underneath is newer, and it has no protection built up. Walking out into a Sarasota afternoon without sunscreen undoes a large part of what we just did, and it does it the same day.
This is not general advice recycled for a blog. UV exposure here is year-round rather than seasonal, and it is the single biggest reason skin ages the way it does on this coast. I wrote about that separately in what the Florida sun does to skin over time.
Put it on before you leave. Reapply if you are outside. If you take one instruction from your appointment, take this one.
What to skip for 48 hours
Retinol and acids. Your skin has just been exfoliated, and layering more exfoliation on top of that is how a comfortable treatment turns into a sensitised week. Two days off, then back to your normal routine.
Scrubs and cleansing brushes, for the same reason. Wash with your hands.
Heavy workouts on the day itself. Sweat sitting in freshly cleared pores is a small thing that occasionally causes a large annoyance. Go the next morning instead.
Hot tubs, saunas and long sun exposure for the first day or two. Heat on newly treated skin is worth avoiding, and none of it is urgent enough to matter.
Makeup afterwards
You can wear it. Plenty of clients go straight from the table to something they have booked, and that is part of why the treatment exists in this form.
That said, if your day allows it, going without for a few hours is the better call. Skin that has just been cleared takes well to being left alone. This is a preference, not a rule.
What is normal in the days after
Light congestion surfacing on day two or three is normal. The extraction work loosens things that were sitting deeper, and some of it comes up rather than out. It settles on its own within a few days and it is not a reaction.
Skin feeling more hydrated and looking flatter under makeup is normal and it is the point. Pores reading smaller is normal too, and it is because they are emptier rather than because anything has changed structurally.
What is not normal is lasting redness, stinging, or anything that feels like a burn. The full list of hydrafacial side effects is short, and none of those are on it. If it happens I want to hear about it rather than have you wait it out. Call me.
What to do for the rest of the month
Sunscreen daily, a moisturiser you actually reach for, and no dramatic changes to your routine for a week. The result holds around three to four weeks, and how you treat your skin in that window is most of what decides whether it is closer to three or closer to four. I go into that in how long does a hydrafacial last.
If you are planning to come back, the interval matters as much as the aftercare. I set out how I decide it in how often should you get a hydrafacial, and it is often less frequently than people assume.
Before your next appointment
Skip retinol and acids for 48 hours beforehand as well, which is the same instruction running in the other direction. Come with clean skin if you can. And tell me what you have been using at home, including anything you started since the last visit, because it changes what I do.
The full pre-appointment detail lives on the HydraFacial service page, along with what the session includes and what it costs.
Frequently asked questions
What should I not do after a HydraFacial?
Skip retinol, acids, scrubs and cleansing brushes for 48 hours. Avoid heavy workouts, saunas and hot tubs on the day. And do not go out without sunscreen, which matters more than everything else combined.
Can I wear makeup after a HydraFacial?
Yes, straight away if you need to. Going without for a few hours is slightly better for the skin, but it is a preference rather than a rule.
When can I wash my face after a HydraFacial?
That evening, gently, with your hands rather than a brush or a scrub. Use your normal cleanser and hold off on anything active until the second day.
Is it normal to break out after a HydraFacial?
Light congestion surfacing on day two or three is normal, because the extraction work loosens things that were sitting deeper. It settles within a few days. Lasting redness or stinging is not normal, and I want to know if that happens.
How soon can I work out after a HydraFacial?
The next morning. Sweat sitting in freshly cleared pores on the same day is worth avoiding, and skipping one session is a small cost.
Do I really need sunscreen if I am staying indoors?
Yes. Freshly exfoliated skin has no build-up of protection, and UV here reaches you through windows and on short walks. This is the instruction that decides how long your result holds.
Something not settling the way you expected?
Call (941) 354-9099 and tell me what you are seeing. I would rather hear about it on day two than have you wait a week wondering whether it is normal.
