Chemical peel aftercare: what to expect and how to help your skin heal

Good chemical peel aftercare is what separates a great result from a frustrating one. The peel does the work in the treatment room, but the days that follow are just as important. What I tell every client before they leave my chair is below.

Chemical peel aftercare basics

Keep your skin clean and moisturized, stay out of direct sun, and do not pick or peel flaking skin yourself. Use only gentle, fragrance-free products for at least five to seven days. Avoid heat, heavy sweating, and active ingredients like retinol or exfoliants until your skin has fully recovered.

What your skin is doing after a peel

A chemical peel speeds up your skin's natural renewal process. The outer layers shed to make room for newer, smoother skin underneath. Some redness, tightness, and flaking are completely normal -- it does not mean something went wrong.

How much peeling you see depends on the depth of the peel. A light peel may cause barely visible flaking. A medium peel can lead to more noticeable shedding over several days. Whatever your experience, resist the urge to pull or pick. Removing skin before it is ready can cause irritation and uneven results.

Day-by-day chemical peel aftercare guide

The first 24 hours are about letting your skin settle. Avoid washing your face more than necessary. Use lukewarm water and a gentle, non-foaming cleanser. Pat dry, do not rub.

Days two through four are usually when flaking begins. Keep your skin moisturized with something simple and calming. The more comfortable your skin feels, the less tempted you will be to interfere with the process. If you wear makeup, wait until any sensitivity has passed, and choose mineral formulas if possible.

By days five through seven, most surface peeling has resolved for light peels. Your skin may still feel a little more sensitive than usual. Hold off on active ingredients -- retinol, vitamin C serums, and any physical or chemical exfoliants -- until I give you the green light.

Sun protection is non-negotiable

Fresh skin after a peel is more vulnerable to sun damage. On the Gulf coast, that is not a small concern. Even a few minutes of unprotected exposure in Sarasota's sun can undo results and cause uneven pigmentation on newly treated skin.

Wear a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher every morning, starting the day after your peel. Reapply if you are spending time outdoors. A wide-brimmed hat helps too. Sun protection during recovery is the single biggest factor in how good your results actually look.

What to avoid after a chemical peel

  • Hot showers, steam rooms, or saunas for at least 48 hours
  • Intense workouts that cause heavy sweating in the first 24 to 48 hours
  • Retinol, exfoliating acids, and scrubs until fully healed
  • Picking, peeling, or rubbing flaking skin
  • Fragrance-heavy products or anything that stings on contact
  • Direct sun without SPF

Frequently asked questions about chemical peel aftercare

How long does chemical peel aftercare last?

Most aftercare protocols last five to seven days for light peels and up to two weeks for deeper treatments. Your skin will tell you when it is ready to return to your normal routine. When in doubt, wait an extra day or two.

Can I wash my face after a chemical peel?

Yes, but gently. Use a mild, fragrance-free cleanser and cool or lukewarm water. Avoid rubbing or using a washcloth. Pat your skin dry. Twice a day is plenty during the first week.

Is peeling or flaking normal?

Yes. Peeling is a sign that the outer layer of skin is shedding as intended. Some people see dramatic flaking, others barely notice it. Both outcomes can be normal depending on the type of peel. What matters is that you let it happen naturally.

When can I use retinol again after a chemical peel?

I usually recommend waiting until any visible peeling has resolved and your skin feels calm, which is often around the seven-day mark for light peels. For deeper peels, wait until we have checked in and I can assess where your skin is. Starting too soon can cause irritation.

What moisturizer should I use after a peel?

Something simple. Look for a fragrance-free, non-comedogenic moisturizer with calming ingredients. Avoid anything with active acids, retinol, or strong fragrances during recovery. If a product stings when you apply it, set it aside until your skin has healed.

What happens if I pick the peeling skin?

Picking before skin is ready to release naturally can irritate the deeper layers underneath and increase the chance of uneven results. It is one of the most common reasons people are unhappy with how a peel turns out. Moisturize frequently so the tightness feels manageable, and leave the rest to your skin.

When to reach out

Most of what happens after a peel is normal and expected. But if you experience significant swelling, a rash that spreads, or anything that does not feel right, call me. I would rather you check in than wait and wonder.
